Tiny ways to make your space feel better :)

a lil’ reminder that your home doesn’t have to be spotless to feel good. eight tiny ways to make your space feel a little cozier, a little calmer + a whole lot more like you. (no deep cleaning required ☻)

You know that feeling when you look around your house + suddenly everything is annoying you?

The pile of mail on the counter. The blanket that’s been halfway on the floor for three days. The coffee cup you keep meaning to bring to the kitchen. The mysterious collection of things on the dinner table that absolutely do not belong there.

Sometimes your home just feels a little… off.

And while the internet would love to convince you that the solution is a $400 robot vacuum, a brand-new couch and a fancy new rug, I’m here to suggest something significantly less ambitious.

Ten minutes.

That’s it. Ten minutes to make your space feel a little more like somewhere you actually want to spend time. Not a deep clean. Not a Sunday reset that somehow takes six hours. Just a few tiny things that make a surprisingly big difference.

1. Clear one surface (seriously, just one)

I’m not asking you to organize your entire kitchen -- I would never lol -- I’m just saying find one surface that’s been bothering you + give it a little attention.

Your coffee table. Your nightstand. That one corner of the kitchen counter where everything goes to die. (In our house, we have exactly one kitchen countertop + everything lands there. Receipts. Hair ties. Lip balms. Car keys. Even though there are places for those things, this particular countertop is a MAGNET.)

Put things back where they belong, toss the garbage, and give it a quick wipe. There’s something deeply satisfying about looking at a surface + actually being able to see it again.

And if the rest of your house is still a mess? Congratulations, you now have one nice little spot to look at instead!

2. Open a window + let your house breathe

Weather permitting, obviously. I’m not suggesting you open your windows during a February blizzard, but a few minutes of fresh air can make a room feel completely different.

Open a window. Pull back the curtains. Let some actual daylight in. It’s easy to get used to the way your home feels when you’re in it all the time and sometimes all it needs is a little fresh air to shake things up.

Bonus points if there’s a nice breeze + you get to pretend you’re in a movie where there's birds chirping + a pie cooling on the windowsill.

3. Fix the lighting 💡

I have a personal vendetta against aggressive overhead lighting. It's called The Big Light and they are never, ever turned on unless I'm doing the patented Rogers Panic Clean (that's when I'm feeling super anxious or I know someone is coming over + they are obviously going to critique my dusty baseboards + realize I am not a functioning adult.) There is absolutely no reason for my living room to feel like the waiting room at a dentist’s office when I’m trying to relax.

Turn off the big light. Switch on a table lamp. Open the curtains if it’s daytime. Let your space have a little softness. Lighting changes the mood of a room almost immediately + you don’t need to spend a single dollar to make it happen. (Okay, yes the light bill will notice, but we're not talking about lighting up the whole neighborhood for a week straight! Turn on that cute lil' lamp you found at Marshall's! Let her shine!!)

Sometimes the difference between this room is stressing me out and oh, this is nice is literally just turning off one light.

4. Make something smell nice

Okay, obviously I was going to include this one. I make things that smell nice! But hear me out.

Scent has a funny way of making an ordinary moment feel a little more intentional.

Light your favorite candle while you’re folding laundry. Spritz a little room spray after tidying up. Put on a scent that reminds you of somewhere you love.

You don’t need a special occasion to make your house smell good.

In fact, I think the random Tuesday afternoons are exactly when you should.  There’s something really lovely about doing a nice little thing for yourself when absolutely nobody else is around to appreciate it.

5. Put away 5 things

Five. Not fifty! Find five things that aren’t where they’re supposed to be and put them away.

Shoes by the door. A sweatshirt on the chair. The water glass that’s been living on your nightstand since approximately 2007. You’d be surprised how much visual clutter disappears when you deal with just a handful of things.

And if you feel like continuing after five? Great! If you don’t? Also great! This is not a competition + nobody is coming over to inspect your baseboards :)

6. Make one spot extra cozy

Pick the place where you actually like to hang out.

Maybe it’s your couch. Maybe it’s your bed. Maybe it’s the chair by the window that you bought because you imagined yourself reading books there, even though you’ve mostly used it to hold laundry.

Fluff the pillows. Fold the blanket. Straighten the bedding. Move your favorite book within reach. Give yourself one little corner that feels inviting. I think we spend so much time thinking about how our homes look to other people that we forget they’re supposed to feel good to us.

Your home doesn’t need to look like a magazine. It needs to feel like somewhere you belong.

7. Do one tiny thing for future you

This might be my favorite one.

Fill up your water bottle and put it in the fridge. Set out your coffee mug for tomorrow morning. Clear the dishes out of the sink. Put fresh towels in the bathroom. Nothing dramatic. Just one small thing that makes the next part of your day a little easier.

Future you deserves nice things, too. And sometimes those nice things are as simple as waking up to a clean kitchen counter.

8. Actually enjoy your space!!

Here’s the part that’s easy to forget. Once you’ve made your space feel a little better, you should probably take a minute to enjoy it.

Sit down. Drink something you like. Put on a song. Pet your dog. Stare out the window for absolutely no reason. You don’t have to immediately move on to the next chore just because you’ve built up a little momentum.

The whole point of making your home feel better is getting to actually live in it. Not just endlessly maintain it.

Your Home Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect to Feel Good

I think there’s a lot of pressure to make our homes look a certain way. Perfectly styled shelves. Immaculate kitchens. Beautifully organized closets. Not a single rogue sock in sight. But real homes are lived in.

There are dishes. There are dog toys. There are half-finished projects + blankets that never seem to stay folded. There are weeks when keeping up with everything feels impossible.

And that’s okay.

Making your space feel good doesn’t have to mean making it perfect. Sometimes it’s just clearing off the coffee table, opening a window, lighting a candle + deciding that what you’ve done is enough for today.

Ten minutes. A few little changes. A home that feels a little more like yours.

You deserve nice things. Even on an ordinary Tuesday.

got a few more minutes?
